My current project is a 1971 AMC Javelin SST that I picked up in October of 2021. It came with the original 401 ci V8 and TF-727. Both were modified.
Sadly, the previous owner neglected it and let the cooling system rust out, causing it to overheat and crack four pistons on the first drive.
Rather than rebuild it i decided to put in a 6.0L LY6 LS engine with a stage 2 cam, ls3 intake and injectors, stiffer valve springs, and ls7 lifters.
I was luckily able to source an adapter kit for the TF-727 and a custom built 3000 stall Boss Hog torque converter to mate the motor and transmission.
On top of the custom work, I have a full Edelbrock standalone Pro-Flo-4 EFI system and fuel sump system that will be controlling the setup for me.
I built custom solid motor mounts from 1/4" steel to fit with a low-profile oil pan and 102mm Throttle Body and long tube headers
I am currently working on solidworks to create and 3-D print a new instrument panel. The old panel is worn and cracked and has no way to mount the Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 tablet. The panel will be split into 4 sections with each section being interchangeable and if i decide to add switches or a radio down the road i can just pop a new section in. In my first trial, the tablet mounted perfectly but i messed up the overall height measurements in the process so it is time to go back to the computer for some adjustments. These panels are extremely rare and upwards of $300 on Ebay, so if this project works out well i may start selling custom ‘71 Javelin instrument panels for $100-150 fully painted to help support the aftermarket AMC community. Eventually i will begin printing light lenses, moulding clips, and other dashboard plastics.
The current 1971 AMC Javelin project started out as a car I had seen on Offer Up while I had my previous car, the 1966 Lincoln Continental. Although the Continental was not finished, I wanted this car bad enough that I sold the Lincoln and bought this. my first day with it led to four cracked pistons through neglect from the previous owner so I decided to look around for a new motor. I ended up sourcing the 6.0L from a nearby shop and planned everything out thoroughly. first starting with how I was going to be able to mate the new motor to the old trans, I found a company that produced adapter kits, which meant I needed a new torque converter to fit the kit, as well as the size of the cam that I put in the motor. the cam and valve spring combo that I put in the motor allows me to rev the engine up to 7000 rpms. after finally getting all of the parts in for the adapter and torque converter, I mocked up the engine to see what size of oil pan I would need and proceeded to get that. after the oil pan was on, I measured the clearances and used SolidWorks to create motor mounts for the car and built them. after the motor was installed, the next step was headers and the fuel system. finding the right headers was a challenged because I did not want them to collide with anything on the firewall, so I went with used American racing C3 corvette LS swap headers. After the fuel system, cooling system, and headers were installed, I custom fabricated an alternator mounting bracket in order to get the correct belt size. a few finishing touches such as fabricating strut bar mounts, tuning, body panel mounts, some interior work, and an exhaust system, are all that is left.
